The validity of the eustatic interpretation of the Exxon sequence chart of Vail, Haq and others, has been questioned by numerous workers. Nonetheless global correlation using these sequences (explicitly requiring a global cause) continues. In 1992 David Rowley and I published a paper (Rowley and Markwick, 1992) in which we highlighted the implications of the Haq et al (Exxon) 3rd order eustatic curve, pointing out the implicit need for large fluctuating ice sheets throughout the Mesozoic and Cenozoic, for which there was demonstrably no unequivocal evidence. This was followed (after four years 'in press' ) with a complimetary paper that sought to critcially examine the evidence for "hot-house" ice (Markwick and Rowley, 1998). A further paper mapping the probable evolution of the Antarctic ice-sheet is in preparation.
