2006: SEPM/GSL Joint Research Conference
"The Application of Earth System Modelling to Exploration"
July 11-13, Snowbird, Utah, U.S.A.
Convenors: Paul Markwick (GETECH); John Suter (ConocoPhillips); Joe Curiale (Chevron).
The Snowbird conference was a great success and my co-conveners and I are now in the midst of receiving submissions for the conference-related SEPM Special Publication.

I would like to thank all of the presenters who made the meeting so stimulating, my co-conveners for all of their efforts, the SEPM and GSL teams for helping with the logistics (especially Theresa Scott, without whom the conference would not have run so smoothly), and finally, but most importantly, the sponsors, whose generosity ensured that we could support the keynote speakers and develop the SEPM volume in the way we wanted. So thank you ExxonMobil, Chevron, ConocoPhillips, Shell, GeoMark, GETECH, Hydro, and Fugro-Robertson.

The meeting summary and abstract volume are now available on the SEPM website. Follow the links to the "SUMMARY" and "ABSTRACTS" (the pdf of the abstract volume is about 4MB).

Numerous attendees have suggested a follow-up meeting and we would welcome any suggestions to this end. In the meantime I draw you attention to next September's SEPM/GSL meeting in Cambridge on Palaeogeography and Palaeoclimate, which will examine one of the most important, but frequently neglected, boundary conditions for Earth System Modelling and Exploration: palaeogeography.

Sea Level Change
Modern sea-level Sea-level +c.1m (melting of all modern mountain glaciers) Sea-level +c.9m (melting of all modern mountain glaciers + Greenland Ice-sheet)

Several years ago I was manipulating some modern Digital Elevation Models as part of my palaeogeographic work. Part of this involved flooding the modern world for varying sea-level rises, including changes associated with melting increasing amounts of the worlds cryosphere (ice). In the last week the subject of sea-level change has been back in the news as concerns rise again about the effects of global warming on the Arctic and Greenland ice sheets, so I thought that it was time to put some of this work on the web site.

The flooding show in red is not corrected for isostatic effects due to the mass of the water load, nor is there any attempt to correct for thermal expansion due to temparture increases.

More information can be found in the climate change section
