DEMs

A DEM (Digital Elevation Model) is a gridded representation of the Earth's (or any other planet's) relief (see also the Topography section). The advantage of representing an surface as a grid is that calculations concerning it can be made more easily. This is important for any investigation of the Earth System, especially the interaction of that surface with it's biota and climate. Because of this my recent research has concentrated on trying to develop palaeo-DEMS that robustly represent not only the relief of past time intervals, but also the contemporary drainage. This was presented at the AGU 2001 Fall Meeting (Markwick, 2001) and is currently being written up. Once in press I'll post more information on the method and some representative figures. In the meantime do check out my AGU abstract and the figure below, which though of low resolution will give you a sense of what is being achieved.
