Research

The research described in these pages goes back to my PhD at The University of Chicago and post-doc at the University of Reading. The resulting methods have been applied successfully in Industry over the last 20 years and continue to be utilized in academic research around the world.

With honourary research positions at the universities of Leeds and Bristol here in the UK, I am now embarking on a new chapter of research.

Palaeoclimatology
What is the record of climate through the geological past? What drives these changes? What does the past tell us about potential future climate change?
Picture
Palaeogeography
Palaeogeography represents the history fo the Earth's surface. But, how reliable is this and what does the geological record really record?
Picture
Palaeoecology
My interest in palaeoecology was developed through working wiht some of the greats of quantitative palaeontology at the University of Chicago. What I was interested in was understanding what the fossil record could tell me about climate and palaeogeography. But there is so much more to this story.

Drainage Analysis
As part of my palaeogeographic research is the reconstruction of past river systems. This is extremely important for oil, gas and minerals exploration as it provides information on transport pathways through time.
Picture
Tectonics
Tectonics underpins what happens at the surface of the Earth and what is recorded. My research looks at how tectonics links to landscape dynamics and evolution and how this relates to palaeogeography and thereby Earth System modelling

Database Development & GIS
A key part of analysing geological data is having reliable data management and storage and the tools to spatially analysize what you have. Much of my background in this area goes back to the work of Fred Zieglers Paleogeographic Atlas Project.
